This article does four things. It defines AEO and GEO once, in plain language, so you can recognize both in the wild. It shows why the debate is a red herring — eight competitors, eight different splits, none of them resolves the contradiction. It introduces the Three-Layer Visibility Model that does. And it gives you a decision framework based on diagnosis (where your brand actually fails), not vocabulary (which acronym sounds correct).
The acronym fatigue problem
Type “AEO vs GEO” into any community thread and read the top reply: it usually starts with skepticism. Practitioners on Reddit have called the new acronyms “bullshit buzzwords” and “just SEO with a fresh coat of paint.” A long-running HubSpot Community thread, “AEO vs AIO vs GEO — What's The Difference?”, catalogs the same confusion month after month.
That skepticism is not unreasonable. In 18 months the industry produced at least five competing labels (AEO, GEO, AIO, LLMO, GSO) for what is broadly the same job: getting AI systems to mention your brand in their answers. Vendors picked different acronyms. Listicles use them interchangeably. The same tool appears in “best AEO tools” and “best GEO tools” roundups in the same month, written by the same publisher.
If you're a marketer trying to allocate budget, the natural question is which one to optimize for. We will argue that this is the wrong question. The right question is: where in the AI pipeline is my brand failing (training data, contextual retrieval, or fresh session) and what fixes that failure?
Quick definitions: AEO and GEO side by side
Both terms come up often enough that you need a working definition for each. Here are the canonical ones.
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is a set of content, technical, and off-site practices that help AI systems find your brand, cite your content, and recommend you as a solution. The target surfaces are answer engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, Claude, and Microsoft Copilot. The success metrics are citation rate, recommendation rate, and AI Share of Voice — not rankings.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is a term that originated in academic research, notably the Princeton/Meta GEO study (November 2023). The paper used “GEO” for optimization techniques that increase content visibility inside AI-generated responses. Functionally, GEO and AEO overlap almost entirely. Far & Wide uses AEO as the primary term; GEO appears in academic citation contexts.

If you read this table and think “these are 90% the same,” that is the right reaction. The disagreement between camps is mostly about which surfaces count and which optimizations belong in scope. The underlying mechanic (get AI to surface your content and your brand) is identical.
Why the AEO-vs-GEO debate is a red herring
Eight major published guides use four different splits. None of the four is wrong. None of the four is right. They are competing taxonomies for the same phenomenon.
The four camps
Camp 1: Surface split. AEO optimizes for AI answers inside search engines (Google AI Overviews, Bing Copilot, Perplexity instant answers). GEO optimizes for AI chat interfaces (ChatGPT, Gemini conversations). The split is defensible until you remember that Perplexity is both a chat interface and a search-style answer surface. The line wobbles.
Camp 2: Intent split. AEO is about being the answer (featured snippets, voice). GEO is about being the cited source that feeds the answer. The cleanest definition for “which discipline applies to which query type.” But it stretches when ChatGPT both quotes you and recommends you in the same response.
Camp 3: Umbrella split. GEO is the umbrella discipline; AEO is a subset focused on AI citation in chat interfaces specifically. Inverts when you read industry guides that treat AEO as the umbrella and GEO as a subset — the umbrella keeps swapping depending on who is writing.
Camp 4: They're the same. AEO, GEO, GSO are vocabulary choices for the same work. Probably the most honest reading, but it leaves marketers with no decision tool.
Why none of these resolve the contradiction
If a single category had won, vendors would not use different acronyms in the same listicle. They do. The same set of AI-visibility tracking tools appears in both “best AEO tools” and “best GEO tools” roundups within weeks of each other, often on the same publishers. The vendors themselves cannot decide which discipline they sell.
A taxonomy fight where everyone is partially right means the taxonomy is the wrong unit of analysis. You cannot pick the correct camp because there isn't one. What you can do is stop arguing about the label and look at what AI is actually doing when a customer asks about your category.
What actually drives AI visibility: the Three-Layer Visibility Model
When a user asks ChatGPT “what's the best CRM for a small clinic,” ChatGPT does not run one process. It runs three, in some combination, and the output blends what they each return.
The Three-Layer Visibility Model names those three processes. They map directly to the optimizations the AEO and GEO camps each prioritize, which is why both camps are partially right.
Layer 1: Parametric knowledge
Parametric knowledge is what an AI model already knows from training, without searching the web. Ask ChatGPT “what does Stripe do” with web search disabled — the answer comes from Layer 1. The model recalls it from weights.
For your brand, Layer 1 visibility means the model has trained on enough mentions of you in trusted sources (Wikipedia, major publications, industry reports, Reddit threads) that it can describe your product without help from the open web. Layer 1 is the most durable form of AI visibility. It survives model updates, API changes, and even temporary site outages. It also takes the longest to build: 3-12 months, often longer, and only when models retrain. If your brand launched after the model's training cutoff, Layer 1 is zero.
Layer 2: Contextual web search
Layer 2 is what the AI retrieves when it searches the web with user context. A developer asking “best CRM” mid-conversation about CI/CD pipelines gets different results than a marketer asking the same question after discussing campaigns. The model searches with the prior conversation in mind.
Layer 2 visibility comes from audience-segmented content, entity-rich pages, topical authority through interlinked articles, and explicit ideal-customer signals (case studies, vertical landing pages, role-specific guidance). Timeline: 2-8 weeks.
Layer 3: Fresh session search
Layer 3 is the AI's behavior in an anonymous, no-history session. Incognito mode, first-time query, zero context. This is what most monitoring dashboards measure because it is the easiest to replicate.
Layer 3 visibility is mostly structure: self-contained sections, clear H2 headings, answer-first paragraphs, comparison tables, named entities, actionable statistics. Timeline: 1-4 weeks. The fastest layer to move, the easiest to test, and unfortunately, the only one most AEO tools cover.
Why this resolves the AEO-vs-GEO debate
Look at how the four camps map to the layers. The “GEO is umbrella” camp is mostly arguing about Layer 1 and Layer 3 — passage-level optimization of content the model trains on or retrieves. The “AEO is the answer” intent camp is essentially talking about Layer 3 with a little Layer 2. The surface-split camp is dividing by retrieval surface, but both surfaces still draw from Layer 2 and Layer 3. The “they're the same” camp is correct that the goal is identical; they just don't have a model that names the underlying mechanism.
The layers are the underlying mechanism. The layers are what you can measure, optimize, and report on. AEO and GEO are vocabularies for outcomes; the three layers are what produce those outcomes.
Decision framework: by diagnosis, not by acronym
Stop asking “should I do AEO or GEO.” Start asking “which layer is my brand failing on, and what fixes that failure.” The answer is one of four scenarios.
Scenario 1: GPTBot or ClaudeBot is blocked in robots.txt
Fix this first. Nothing else helps until it's fixed. If your robots.txt blocks GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, or Google-Extended, AI platforms cannot retrieve your content during web search. The most beautifully structured page is invisible to a crawler that gets a 403.
Many CMS platforms added AI bots to disallow lists by default in 2023-2024. Check yours. If you find blocks you did not put there yourself, remove them. This is a 30-minute fix that gates every other optimization downstream.
Scenario 2: Layer 1 is empty (Parametric Knowledge Score is 0-2)
If you ask ChatGPT about your brand with web search off and the model says “I don't have specific information,” your Layer 1 is empty. This is normal for newer brands and brands outside the training data of major model versions.
Prioritize: Layer 1 first. Get into the sources models train on. Wikipedia entry (only if notability is real), feature mentions in major publications, Reddit and forum discussions where your category lives, industry reports, podcast appearances that get transcribed. This work takes months and compounds over the model retraining cycle.
Scenario 3: Layer 3 is weak (you're invisible in fresh sessions)
Ask ChatGPT a “best [your category]” question in a clean, web-search-on session. If your brand is not in the response and competitors with weaker products are, your Layer 3 is weak.
Prioritize: Layer 3 first. Audit your pages for self-contained sections, answer-first paragraphs, named entities, comparison tables, and AI bot access. Add structured data (Organization, Article, FAQPage where appropriate). Make sure every section passes the Information Island test — copy it to a new doc, and it should still make sense.
Scenario 4: Layers 1 and 3 are decent but Layer 2 is weak
You appear in fresh sessions and the model has heard of you, but contextual queries (the developer asking after a CI/CD discussion) miss you.
Prioritize: Layer 2. Build audience-segmented content. Vertical landing pages for industries, role-specific guides, case studies with named customer profiles, schema markup that ties your offering to the right entity types. This is the layer most competitors ignore because it doesn't show up cleanly in Layer 3 dashboards.

Five anti-patterns to avoid
Most teams approach AI visibility through the wrong lens. Five patterns repeat across every audit we run.
Anti-pattern 1: Chasing all five acronyms in parallel. Trying to optimize for AEO, GEO, AIO, LLMO, and GSO as if they were five disciplines is five different ways to say the same work. Pick one term, do the work behind it, ignore the vocabulary fights.
Anti-pattern 2: Blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt and then complaining you are invisible. Many sites still block GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot — sometimes by default, sometimes from a 2023 over-correction. Every optimization downstream is wasted while these blocks are in place. Audit robots.txt first.
Anti-pattern 3: Treating AEO and GEO as alternatives. The “should we do AEO or GEO” question implies you have to pick. You do not. Both target the same layers. The work overlaps. The right framing is “what does my brand need,” not “what discipline am I buying.”
Anti-pattern 4: Relying on a single dashboard. Most AEO tools measure Layer 3 only — fresh sessions, fixed-prompt tracking. You can score 100 on the dashboard and still be invisible to the developer who asked after a long technical conversation (Layer 2) or to the model running offline (Layer 1). A dashboard is a measurement, not a strategy.
Anti-pattern 5: Optimizing for a brand that the model has never heard of. If your Parametric Knowledge Score is 0, no amount of on-page work creates Layer 1 visibility. You have to seed mentions in training-data sources first. This is slow, it is unsexy, and it is the only thing that builds durable presence.
The numbers: what primary research actually shows
Skip the second-hand statistics. Here is what primary research says about how AI visibility is actually built.
Authority citations and statistics increase AI visibility by 30-40%. The Princeton/Meta GEO study (November 2023) tested optimization techniques against AI-generated responses. Adding authoritative citations and statistics produced the largest gains. Keyword stuffing produced a -6% change — actively negative.
Zero-click is the default in search now. SparkToro and Datos analyzed 2 billion Google searches in 2024 and found that 56-69% of all Google searches end with zero clicks. In AI search, zero-click is built in — the user reads the answer and may never visit your site. Brand visibility in the answer replaces click-through as the primary metric.
ChatGPT drives most AI referral traffic. Digiday (2025) reports that ChatGPT accounts for 87.4% of AI referral traffic in the analyzed dataset. If you have to start with one engine, start there.
AI conversion is high, but only if AI cites you. Gartner has reported AI chatbots convert traffic to sales 4-5x better than traditional search. The conversion gain only matters if the chatbot is actually mentioning your brand. AI Share of Voice is the front door.

Practical guidance: pick AEO if you want a single label that covers the discipline. Use “AI Overviews” specifically when you mean Google's surface, not AIO. Treat the rest as synonyms or vendor-specific framings, not separate fields.

A short list of moves that work regardless of which acronym you prefer.

- Audit homepage and category pages for self-contained sections, answer-first paragraphs, named entities, and comparison tables.
- Pick an answer engine to focus on first. ChatGPT for highest referral volume; Perplexity if your audience is researcher-heavy.
- Skip the acronym argument. Pick AEO or GEO, stay consistent, do the work.
