Free AI visibility scan vs paid audit vs subscription: which do you need in 2026?

A free AI visibility scan is enough to learn whether you have a problem: whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Copilot name your brand when buyers ask. It is not enough to measure your visibility reliably, and it fixes nothing. That is the short answer as of October 2026. A one-off paid audit adds a fix list that someone still has to carry out and that ages as AI answers change. A subscription keeps measuring, and the right kind also makes the changes.

Back to Blog

Far & Wide, the AI visibility platform that publishes this blog, offers a free scan and paid plans that keep measuring; on the Fix plan, a group of agents makes the changes on your site once you approve them.

Quick verdict: what you can check free today, and what each paid option adds

Free checks you can run today:

  • The ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot apps. Ask the questions your buyers ask and note whether your brand appears.
  • Google Search Console’s Generative AI performance report, which Google recommends “to measure how your content is performing in generative AI features on Google Search and Discover.”
  • Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report, which Microsoft says shows your citations in Copilot and Bing’s AI summaries, plus the “grounding queries” behind them.
  • A free AI visibility scan, such as Far & Wide’s free scan (10 buyer questions, each asked once on 4 platforms you pick, up to 40 answers).

What each paid option adds:

  • A one-off paid audit: a diagnosis and a fix list, once; your team does the fixes.
  • A tracking-only subscription: the same questions asked again on a schedule, for a trend; every fix is still your job.
  • A platform that ships: repeated measurement plus the work itself (code, design, pages, outreach), each change approved by you, site changes verified live, affected questions re-measured.

The core difference: a scan and an audit are snapshots; a subscription is a loop, and only a platform that ships closes it.

  • How many answers and how often: subscriptions; 40 answers still show a clear absence.
  • How long it stays current: subscriptions, because products recommended “often change across repeated requests”.
  • Who makes the fixes: a platform that ships; an audit or tracker only if you have your own developers and writers.
  • How a fix is checked: a platform that ships, the only option with a before and after per fix.
  • Best for: a free scan to start, a platform that ships to finish.

What is AI visibility?

AI visibility, also called AI search visibility, is how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews name, recommend or cite your brand when people ask the questions your buyers ask. For a SaaS company selling invoicing software, AI visibility is the share of answers to “what’s the best invoicing tool for freelancers?” that put the product on the list instead of a competitor. Being named in passing and being recommended on the shortlist are different outcomes, and a good score counts them separately. More in what AI visibility tracking is.

What is an AI visibility score, and can a free snapshot give you one you can trust?

An AI visibility score is the share of collected AI answers to your buyer questions that name your brand: answers naming you ÷ answers collected × 100, per question set and per platform. For example, a brand named in 6 of 40 answers scores 15%. A free snapshot gives only a rough score: 10 questions × 4 platforms × 1 ask is up to 40 answers, or 10 per platform, so one answer that names you or skips you moves a platform’s score by 10 points.

AI answers also change from one ask to the next. A September 2026 audit of AI product recommendations found that for the same query the ChatGPT and Gemini interfaces “share only 5.4% of domains on average.” An April 2026 paper titled “Don’t Measure Once” concludes: “Answers can vary across runs, prompts, and time, making one-off observations unreliable.”

Four things make an AI visibility score trustworthy:

  1. More questions. SparkToro’s January 2026 research found that “visibility % across dozens to hundreds of prompts run multiple times is a reasonable metric.”
  2. Each question asked many times. The same study advises dozens of asks, usually 60 to 100.
  3. Asked in the real apps. The September 2026 audit warns that “neither isolated responses nor API observations can be assumed to represent the commercial advice consumers encounter” (see real apps vs API).
  4. The same method over time. A trend means something only when the questions and counting stay fixed.

Far & Wide’s paid plans ask 50 questions on the 4 platforms you choose, each 3 times every 3 days or 5 times every 7 days and as up to 3 buyer personas, for up to 18,000 answers a month. The method is in how to measure AI share of voice.

Is a free AI visibility scan enough, or do you need a paid audit?

A free AI visibility scan is enough when your only question is “do AI assistants name us at all?” If your brand is missing from most answers on every platform, a bigger sample will not change that verdict.

A free scan is not enough when you need a number to report, a trend, or any fix. Far & Wide’s free scan shows which buyer questions you win and miss in about twenty minutes, but it is not a technical audit and has no ranked action plan. A paid audit helps only if people are ready to work through its list; otherwise the next step is a plan where the measuring repeats and the fixes get made.

Why does a one-off AI visibility audit go stale?

A one-off AI visibility audit goes stale because it rests on one round of answers, and AI answers keep changing. The “Don’t Measure Once” authors call for “repeated measurements” and for treating visibility “as a distribution rather than a single-point outcome.” A list built on a single point can rank the wrong problems first, and a document can’t prove a fix went live or moved the answers. See how to run an AEO audit.

Should you buy a subscription or a one-off audit to sort out your AI visibility?

Buy a subscription to a platform that ships the fixes, such as Far & Wide’s Fix plan, if you want your AI visibility sorted out and kept that way. A tracking-only subscription only reports, and a one-off audit fits only if you need a single diagnosis and already have the people to carry it out.

Tracking-only subscription

A tracking-only subscription reports a trend; every fix stays on your side. Far & Wide’s Monitor plan covers this case: the same repeated tracking as Fix, plus one free try-out fix a month from each agent group, with the same preview, approval and live check. When the team runs out of time, the Fix plan is where the agents ship the work.

A platform that ships the fixes

A platform that ships measures the same way and then does the work, and Far & Wide’s Fix plan is this kind of platform. Its Technical agent makes code changes such as crawler access, schema, metadata and llms.txt. Its Web Design agent reveals content AI can’t see, such as popups, sliders and text in images. Its Content agent fixes wrong or weak pages and writes missing ones. Its Authority agent finds the publications, forums and LinkedIn conversations AI already cites and, once you approve, sends the outreach, though placement is never guaranteed.

Every Far & Wide site change gets a preview, your approval, two independent checks, verification live on your site and an undo. Changes arrive as a GitHub pull request, a draft in WordPress, Webflow or HubSpot, or ready-to-paste code on other sites, Shopify included. The affected questions are then re-measured, so each fix has a before and after.

When a one-off audit is the better buy

A one-off audit can be right when an in-house developer and writer have spare time, or for one event such as a site migration. Even then, the list goes stale as answers move. A platform that ships, such as Far & Wide’s Fix plan, keeps measuring and makes the changes once you approve them, and the Monitor plan keeps the same questions measured if your own team does the work. For a strategist in your meetings on brand positioning, or a PR campaign across several markets, an agency suits that job. Budget ranges are in how much AEO costs and the AEO pricing guide.

What does it cost to check and fix AI visibility by hand?

Checking and fixing AI visibility by hand costs €0 in cash and about 50 to 60 hours a month, before code, design, outreach or rewriting existing pages. The sums assume about a minute to ask and log each AI answer.

  • One snapshot like a free scan: 10 questions × 4 apps × 1 ask = 40 answers, about 40 minutes, once.
  • Repeating it like a subscription: each question asked 3 times every 3 days is about 10 runs a month, so 10 × 4 × 3 × 10 = 1,200 answers, about 20 hours a month, still for only 10 questions.
  • Writing 10 new pages a month: 3 to 4 hours each is 30 to 40 hours. Each rewritten page adds 1 to 2 hours.

By hand you can’t ask each question dozens of times, can’t change code unless someone can edit the site, and rarely keep pages and outreach going monthly. The full routine is in DIY vs agency vs platform; picking questions is in finding your customers’ AI prompts.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose a free scan if you have never checked and want to know whether AI assistants name you.
  • Choose a one-off paid audit if your own developers and writers will work through a one-time list; then keep the questions measured, for example on Far & Wide’s Monitor plan, or let a platform that ships make the changes.
  • Choose a tracking-only subscription if your team already ships code, content and outreach every month. Far & Wide’s Monitor plan adds one free try-out fix a month from each agent group, so you can move to Fix when the team runs out of time.
  • Choose a platform that ships if you want the gaps closed: changes made on your site, verified live and re-measured, with your time spent on approvals. Far & Wide’s Fix plan does this with the whole group of agents.

Simple decision rule: to know whether you have a problem, run a free scan. For a one-time list your own team will work through, buy an audit; to get it fixed and kept fixed, subscribe to a platform that ships. To judge the payoff, see measuring AEO results and ROI.

FAQ

A free checker is accurate about what it saw, but the sample is small: with 10 answers per platform, one changed answer moves that platform’s score by 10 points.

See where you stand, then get it fixed
